One of the most popular of the large macaws, the Blue and Gold Macaw (ara ararauna) is a beautiful bird, with vibrant plumage in, yes, blue and gold, but also with green and black and yellowish-green. Adults are bright blue above, golden yellow below, with a green forehead and crown. The face is white, with fine lines of very dark green, almost black, feathers, like miniature zebra stripes. The throat is black, eyes are a pale, silvery yellow (babies’ eyes are black), and their tail feathers are very long. They also have the large and powerful black and gray bill that is typical of macaws.

The jungles of Madagascar are the abode of many unique and intriguing animals, from the aye-aye with its long clawed finger for extracting insect larvae from rotten wood, to the huge, white and black furred lemur called the indri, to vasa parrots (Coracopsis vasa and Coracopsis nigra), a fascinating pair of avian species found on Madagascar itself and the nearby islands of the western Indian Ocean. These highly unusual birds have dark charcoal grey feathers, pale pink beaks, long necks, and idiosyncratic breeding behavior that sets them apart from every other parrot species.

The White-fronted Amazon is a species of parrot that is well recognized because of the American coloring on its head. The body of the White-fronted Amazon may be green, but the face features a large quite spot on top, red on the cheeks, and blue on top of the white.

The Mealy Amazon may not seem different than other Amazons in terms of appearance, but this bird has a different personality than many others in this classification.
